Passage 5

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

What you come to know by reading books is not education. All that is merely bookish knowledge. Reading books is just work done for the sake of one's daily bread. This is not what we have to do. We have something else to do.

Are all who have learnt to read and write students? Does gaining college degrees make one educated? Can learning that lacks right wisdom and good deeds be true learning? If learning is just for making a living, do beasts and birds not live as well?

Someone may be a great millionaire. However great a millionaire he may be, only as long as the body lasts do they say, ‘He is so-and-so.’ After that, they give no thought at all to him or to his property. We must give value to the principle of the Ātma alone, not to property.

The cause of unrest is nothing but forgetting who ‘I’ is!

Today not even one person lives in peace. Life is filled with unrest throughout. The reason? Nothing but being unable to recognise the principle of the Ātma! When you cannot know the principle of the Ātma, whatever you know is all in vain! For us to live in this world, worldly learning too is certainly needed. Along with this worldly learning, we must recognise who the ‘I’ is that is present equally in all. What is in him, what is in her, what is in everyone, is that very fundamental principle. Who is the doctor? If someone asks this, he stands up and says, ‘I.’ The degree ‘doctor’ belongs only to his body; it does not belong to the fundamental principle called ‘I’. Because you forget the fundamental ‘I’ and keep in memory only the bodily ‘I’, you are unable to recognise the truth.

Where is God? He is in everyone. ‘The Lord of all beings.’
