In plain words
‘All this is pervaded by the Lord.’ The body may change, but the Dehi cannot change. Mysore pak, gulab jam, mithai, palkova.... The names differ like this, but the sugar in them all is one and the same, is it not! Just like that sugar is the principle of the Ātma called ‘I’ that is in everyone. Only when man recognises, ‘I am the embodiment of the Ātma’, will he live in joy. Only because they recognised this truth were people in former times great yogis. A yogi is not one who has given up everything; he is one who has recognised the truth that everything is within himself.
I say now and then, ‘You are not just one person; there are three in you’: 1. The one you think you are. 2. The one others think you are. 3. The one you really are. The one you think you are is the body. The one others think you are is the mind. The one you really are is the Ātma. That is not something that ever changes. For the body the ‘heart’ is most important. Without the heart there is no body at all. But the principle on which even that heart rests, we call the ‘Ātma’.
Only when you forget the body can you recognise the Indweller
You say, ‘My son has a great job in America.’ Who is your son? The one who is in America? The one who is in England? No. Going only by the form, you say, ‘This is my son.’ If there were no form at all, who would be your son? Now you have performed your son's marriage. A girl has come into your home. ‘Who is she?’ When someone asks, you say, ‘My daughter-in-law.’ Before the wedding, who was this daughter-in-law? All such ties and relationships have arisen only from attachment to the body. None of these is there before, and none is there afterwards. Like passing clouds, they come midway and go midway. Only as long as there is attachment to the body do you regard one as a relative, one as a friend and another as an enemy.
