Passage 2

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

‘Education’ is confined to the physical and mental levels alone; it gives knowledge of physical things only. ‘Educare’ purifies the inner feeling and brings purity of the citta. Our word, our song, our path: each and every one must spring from the heart. That is ‘Educare’. ‘Educare’ makes one recognise the inward principle. ‘Education’ teaches the outward principle. The inward feeling itself finds expression as outward action. If we recognise the inward principle, the outward principle is easily understood. Only great souls rich in experience can understand this well. Ordinary people, though, think that getting big degrees is the very summit of education. Those who have won big degrees cannot all be educated people. Today not one of those who are called educated is looking into what ‘Educare’ means. They merely note what is in books and teach that very thing back to others. Students today are earning so many degrees like these: B.A., M.A., C.A. All of these are external. Those who understand the inner feeling and the inward principle are very rare today. Only when we understand the inward principle are we redeemed.

Students! You must put your education to use for the good of society. You must keep your fits of anger under control. You must practise self-restraint. Besides the things your teachers have taught, you must understand the nature of the body, Manas, Buddhi, citta and the senses, and try to know yourselves. Every individual is made up of the guṇas sattva, rajas and tamas. These three guṇas themselves were given the name Trimūrti. Sattva guṇa concerns inner purity. Rajo guṇa is mirrored in our actions. The work you do, the games you play: all these come from rajo guṇa! The Ātma, which holds all the limbs of the body under its control, is itself the fundamental principle. That alone is true and eternal.
