Passage 8

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

That alone is permanent. The body is fleeting like a bubble on water. The mind is fickle like a mad monkey. So do not follow the body and the mind. Yet as long as the body lasts, you must fulfil your responsibilities. But if your mind is not right, nothing will bear fruit for you. So first of all, you must bring the mind under control. He alone who has a mind is a man. Yours is mankind. So you must develop Kindness. That itself is true humanness. You must not turn your mind into a monkey-mind, that is, fickle like a monkey.

‘This body is for the good of others’

Man is letting go of what is Satya and following what is untrue. In this Kali Age the trading spirit has gone beyond all bounds. Wherever you go, whomever you see, it is all business! Business! Unless you pay money, you cannot get even a pinch of salt. Must it always be taking, and nothing but taking! We must make a habit of giving too. What has the human body come for? For the good of others alone! ‘Doing good to others brings merit; harming others brings sin.’ We should serve others, and not expect others to serve us. As long as we have the strength, we ourselves must give others some help or other. We must do it with the sacred feeling, ‘I am serving God.’ Whatever work you do, you must not do it for your own selfish ends; you must do it to please God. Only then does that work become fruitful. Today you are here. But where will you be tomorrow! Where will you go! All is impermanent! Prema alone is the permanent Divinity. When you have desires of any kind, there is room for others to hate you. But if you have Prema alone in you, no one will hate you. You must not hate anyone. You must not be jealous of anyone; you must not show anger. To do good to one who does you good is no greatness; you must do good even to one who does you harm.
