In plain words
One calls out ‘Grandfather!’; to them I appear just as a grandfather. Another calls out ‘Father!’; to them I appear just as a father. Still others say ‘Swami!’; to them I appear just as Swami. In whatever way people think, in just that way Divinity keeps taking shape.
The root of every kind of change in the world is the mind itself!
Under the sway of this Kali, even the good looks bad. One and the same man is loving towards one and full of hatred towards another; he behaves with enmity towards one, and conducts himself loyally towards another. To one he is a friend, to another an enemy. Friendship and enmity are not outside; they are in people's own hearts alone. If you think, ‘This fellow is my enemy’, he becomes nothing but an enemy to you. If you think, ‘This fellow is my friend’, he turns into a friend. Before marriage you say, ‘She is some college girl’. After you have married her, you say, ‘This is my wife’. The wife you have today and the college girl of those days: are the two not one and the same! Going by forms and names, man makes for himself relationships and kinships of many kinds. The root cause of this world's changing in so many ways is man's mind alone. There is no fault at all in man. Prema itself is what dwells in everyone! But at certain times hatred, envy, ostentation and all such things arise. In God there is no change of this kind. God is beyond the guṇas. The one who has guṇas is man. They may be good; they may be bad. Good and bad are in man alone, not in the Paramātma. In this Kali age many changes are taking place. Seeing all this, you think, ‘God Himself is changing things like this’. God changes nothing whatever. You can mix decoction into milk and make coffee. With that same milk you can make pāyasam too. God is like the milk. All the changes come about only through man's guṇas. The guṇa of man keeps changing in so many ways.
