In plain words
We should no longer stay in this world”: having said this, Dharmaja called Bhīma to him and told him to make the proper arrangements for their mother's last rites. He called Arjuna and told him to make the preparations needed for crowning Parīkṣit king. He called Nakula and Sahadeva: “We must go towards the Himālaya mountains. You two get everything ready for our journey”, he commanded. His mother had died, and he was crowning his younger brother's grandson! At such a time of sorrow, could anyone else act like that!
The Pāṇḍavas set out northwards. Draupadī, Bhīma, Arjuna, Nakula and Sahadeva fell on the way. At last Dharmarāja journeyed on alone and reached hell. In hell many were suffering punishment for the sins they had committed. The moment Dharmarāja set foot there, their pains left them and they felt great relief. Why did Dharmarāja have to enter hell at all? He was one who had never told a lie. But during the war, in order to bring about Droṇa's end, he said aloud, ‘Aśvatthāmā hataḥ’, and spoke the word ‘kuñjaraḥ’ softly. Its meaning is ‘The elephant called Aśvatthāmā is dead’. But Droṇa did not hear the word ‘kuñjaraḥ’ (elephant); thinking his own son had died, he laid down his weapons. Because he had spoken an untruth in this way, caused Droṇa's death and stooped to sin, Dharmaja had to stay in hell for a little while. After that, as Dharmaja was being taken to heaven, all the dwellers of hell went and fell at his feet: “Sir, do not leave us and go. Stay right here and give us joy”, they prayed. Then Dharmaja: ‘My dear ones! I cannot but bow to God's command’, he said, and went off to heaven.
