Passage 3

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

You must use well the learning you have gained. You must walk the good royal road. You must tell what happened just as it happened. Then trust grows in the wife. If, asked why you are late, you say, “I went there, I went here,” a doubt comes to her. You say you went to the cinema. “With whom did you go? Who came with you?” Such questions come up. Tell the truth. Our conduct must be an example to everyone, in the right way. If any relatives come to the house, you must talk with them only so far as is fitting. Only then will you turn out good boys and good girls. What is the use of holding M.A., M.Com., Ph.D. degrees? These degrees are not the important thing. You must earn the degree that guards self-respect. That is the true degree. Class twelve is coming to an end. You will go on to degree classes. There they give some notes or other. You did not write them down. You take them from a classmate and bring them home. The husband sees the notebook. On it there is a boy's name. “Who is he?” Doubts arise. In this way doubts grow and life is ruined. Listen to the words Swami has spoken, and speak the truth faithfully. Tell at home the very conduct you showed outside. Only then will your heart become pure. The mind finds peace. If, instead, one thing happens and you tell another, many doubts arise. This very thing is the root cause of doubts. They come from these fabrications. You must not form ties of any kind.

Tell me your company, I shall tell you what you are. You say what your company is like; I shall say what kind of man you are. If we are in bad company, with a drunkard, that very thing becomes our habit. The moment you reach home, she first looks at the fingers. To see whether you have smoked. So you must go clean. Then no differences of opinion of any kind will come between the two. If a difference of opinion comes, she goes off to her people's house. So see that such things do not arise. Character matters more than learning. Morality is far greater than learning. We must make a fitting effort to keep morality safe. Keep all these things in mind and go on living by them. If you live that way, not the two of you alone, the country too will prosper. Society will prosper. If society prospers, the country prospers. If the country prospers, the world prospers. So, first of all, you must show society a fitting example. Write the examinations well and win good classes. That very thing is Swami's joy. All through life, Swami will be right beside you, right in the home, right before the eyes.
