Passage 4

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

One must achieve as far as possible. Only then is humanness fulfilled. But one must not, at any rate, become a beast.

‘From rising from sleep until going to sleep again...’ What have you achieved? If there is anything you have achieved, I too will certainly do it. So nothing is achieved by that. Even the spirituality one has achieved is burnt to ashes. If you keep increasing secular knowledge, spiritual knowledge dwindles. Gradually it is not there at all. In the end he becomes an atheist. He is neither a believer nor an atheist; he is ruined for both. First of all, achieve spirituality. You need not read big books and be called a great scholar. In big books there is nothing but words made of the 26 letters of English. No words come other than these words. Good is the same, bad is the same. First of all, know what is good and follow the good. Only when it is so does it become a moral class. A moral class does not mean speaking whatever comes to the mouth and passing the time. One must practise at least one or two good things. That itself protects us. In life, one must take only what is necessary. Food and drink too are necessary. But we must not make them our main goal.

Students! Among yourselves many kinds of arguments are going on. You must not give the slightest room to arguments. Hold on to what you have. Do not strive for what is not there. If you want to go forward, you need not go forward. You can achieve it from the very place where you are. Where you are, there it comes to you. All the great sages did much penance. They live in mountain caves. God goes to that very place and gives them darśan. No one need tell Him the place where they are. People think, ‘God came to the rescue.’ He did not come. You yourself went to Him. God need not come to you. You yourself go to God. So you must make the effort, not God. Holding this feeling, the students must study well and bring a good name to the Institute. It has come now. But a better name than this must come.
