In plain words
Along with culture, we must keep the country too in view.
What is culture? It is simply to recognise well the way of our ancients and the traditions of our people of Bhārata, and to act by them! In matters of business we cannot give up our culture in the least. Culture & Country - conduct that befits these two is itself true humanness. But culture is not something formed by practice, or by ties of kinship. Culture is formed from our heart itself, through the enquiry ‘This is good, this is bad’, through discrimination. But because there is no such ‘discrimination’, culture is being ruined today. As culture is ruined, the country grows very weak. The reason the country grows weak is just this: the people do not follow their culture properly! You know: today each party follows a culture of its own and an idea of its own. Only when all work together, united, will the country progress.
As a student, I went on bringing change to the people through songs
When this body was a student, one day a political leader came from Bukkapatnam: “Bābū! You write good poetry, I hear. You must write a song to stir our heroes,” he requested. They had arranged a meeting in Bukkapatnam. Those were the days when the Second World War was going on. Bhārata was under British rule. I wrote a song to suit the situation of that time. On the stage I put a rubber doll in a cradle and, rocking it, sang that song.
Don't cry, little baby, don't cry, my dear! If you cry, they won't call you a hero of Bhārata... hush... hush... Because Hitler the murderer, upon deathless Russia, has marched in attack, did you cry in fear?... hush... hush... To kill Hitler there is the Red Army, there is Stalin the hero; don't cry... hush... hush... Why else, little one, do you cry like this? Did you cry, saying the people have no unity? United, all the people will join together and fight, and they can win freedom; don't cry ... hush... hush...
