Passage 4

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

But ‘compassion’ is not to be seen now; wherever you look it is ‘come - fashion’! How then can equality come about? We must show at least a little humanness in us. Only when he has human qualities does a man become compassionate of heart. Lust, anger, hatred, envy, show: all these are the traits of beasts. Prema, compassion, Dharma, sacrifice, Satya: these alone are man's true wealth. Today, look at the form and it is a human form; look within and there are animal qualities! We look at the human form, but we do not reflect at all on its excellence. The form is not the chief thing; human quality is needed. If we hurt the people of any country, another country will hurt us. There is no escaping that. Every action is bound to have these three: ‘reaction, resound, reflection’. Only when you recognise this truth and act on it can you foster human qualities. In our educational institutions even little children say very clearly what human qualities are. Even the elders have to learn by watching them. Above all, we must keep fostering human values in little children. Boys and girls must grow up following human values.

The first of the human values is Satya. Where does it come from? It does not come from the earth; it does not drop from the sky; it does not come from north, east, west or south. Satya is right in our own heart. When you inquire well with inward vision, you will surely come to know Satya. The moment Satya comes, Dharma takes shape. When Satya and Dharma come together, Śānti comes. From Śānti, Prema arises. When Śānti and Prema come together, Ahiṃsā is born. So all these are right within us. We ourselves must set them all right. We need not learn them by reading books or by asking elders; they are all within us. Man himself is God. That is why people picture God in human form alone.

Any of you, go and ask God, “Who are You?” He will say, “Ahaṃ brahmāsmi”, “I am Brahman.”
