In plain words
For the good of society the path of Prema alone is the refuge
Satya itself is the world's father, Dharma itself its mother. Only when Satya and Dharma both come together is the child called Śānti born. Only when Śānti comes does Prema arise in us. Then we hate no one; we do not give the least room to anger or to envy. Today, precisely because there is no Prema, even sisters and brothers hate one another. So above all we must nourish Prema. There is not one thing that Prema cannot achieve. Prema itself is God. Live in Prema. Prema itself is our life-breath. There is Prema in all living creatures. Even in an ant there is Prema. It moves here and there, making friends with other ants. There is Prema even in worms, insects and the like. But in man today Prema has dwindled away. Yet man is not without Prema. But he pours that love out on wealth and on his kin and friends. There is no use at all in developing such narrow love; we must develop Prema for society. We are members of society. Only when society is well can we live happily. So we must safeguard the welfare of society. For this, the path of Prema alone is the refuge. If we leave Prema aside and follow any other kind of path, we cannot achieve it.
‘As the king, so the people’
Emperor Bali was a very great man of sacrifice; whatever anyone asked for, he would give it without saying no. To have Bali, so given to sacrifice, as their king was the good fortune of the people of Kerala. Once Bali began a great yajña and went on making many gifts and acts of charity. All the most eminent people came to that yajña. Vāmana too came. As He came walking to the yajña hall wearing a loincloth, everyone fixed their eyes on Him alone. “To this yajña, where great scholars ought to come, a little boy is coming!” some began to say among themselves in jest.
