In plain words
2. True Vidyā is what brings purity of citta
For ignorance to end, Ātmajñāna must come
Whether to grasp the supreme purpose of Vidyā for oneself or to teach it to others, what is needed above all is ‘purity of citta’. Snakes, scorpions and other poisonous creatures cannot enter a room that is bright and clean. Poisonous creatures enter only a place that is dark and unclean. In the same way, holy knowledge does not enter hearts that are dark and impure. The poisonous insects, lust, anger and the rest, make their home there. If you want to remove the blackness of charcoal, it will not go if you scrub it with soap, nor if you wash it with milk. It is enough to put it in the fire. It burns through and turns into white ash. So too, if ignorance is to end and Avidyā is to be destroyed, Ātmajñāna must arise, or Brahmavidyā must come. For darkness to go, light must come; fighting with darkness will not make the darkness go. That light is Vidyā. That radiance is Vidyā, that Jñāna is Vidyā. This is the yoga of the Supreme Person, Puruṣottama Yoga. This yoga is not bought with money, not had from friends, nor supplied by any company. It is something each one comes to know for himself with śraddhā and Bhakti. It is not something studied from books.
