In plain words
Above all, it is the sacrifice of desires; this depends on one's own effort. Here desires means that lust, anger, greed and the rest must be given up. Giving up ‘lust’ is the main sacrifice. Anger, greed and the rest are what lust implies. As when one says ‘Rāma bears the Kodaṇḍa bow’, one must understand that he bears not only the bow but the arrows and the rest too. Lust, anger and the rest are the gates of hell for man. Envy is like a gate-bar across them. Ahaṅkāra is the lock. Open this lock, lift the bar, push the doors, and one may go inside.
