We ourselves are the cause of our good and bad fortune

The destiny of every living being is in the end to attain fullness. It must attain fullness. Our present state depends on the karmas of our past births. That is, our past birth is the cause of today's feelings. Our future state depends on our present karmas and feelings. That is, we ourselves are the cause of our good and bad fortune. We are the doers. Even so, there is no rule that in the matter of our good and bad fortune we may not receive the help of others (the sense is ‘the help of the guru’). Except for a very few, such help is most important for all ordinary people too. When such help is had, the most exalted powers (the guru's powers of the grace of Prema) bring growth of the spiritual life to conscious beings (to human beings). In the end man attains holiness and fullness.
