Passage 7

In plain words

Vidyā is what teaches good sense and the faculty of discrimination

A true student must do good not only to the one who has done him good, but greater good to the one who has done him harm. This is holier still. To do good to one who has done good is ordinary. To do good to one who has done harm is the great virtue. In this matter some good sense and discrimination are most necessary. Vidyā is what teaches such good sense and the faculty of discrimination. At certain times one must necessarily show discrimination in dealing with fools. One must show wisdom in dealing with the ungrateful who forget the good done them. To punish those who do harm is the Dharma of the government. But the student must not take up that role. He must cultivate all the more the will to help others, which is his natural sacrifice and his very nature.
