Time, and the rope in the cowherd's hand· Verses 28–31

I hold you to be time, the ruler, without beginning and without end, the all-pervading, moving evenly everywhere, by whom there is discord among beings, one with another. No one knows what you mean to do, Bhagavan, when you act among men in mockery of them: you to whom no one at any time is dear, and none hateful, and in whom men's understanding is uneven. Birth, and action, in you who are the self of all, unborn and not acting, the Self, among beasts and men and sages and the creatures of the waters: that indeed is mockery. The cowherd woman took up a rope against you when you had done wrong; and the state you were in then, your face brought low, your eyes troubled and their collyrium washed with tears, standing there in the pretence of fear, bewilders me: that fear itself should be afraid.
