Vidura, seeing this, said to Dhrtarastra: king, go out from here at once; look at this fear that has come. Lord, that for which there is no remedy here, from any quarter and at any time, that very Lord, who is time, has come upon us all. When a person is overtaken by it he is parted at once even from the breath that is dearest to him; how much sooner from other things, from wealth and the rest. Your fathers, your brothers, your friends and your sons are killed; your years are gone; your body is taken hold of by old age; and you wait upon another man's house. How very great is a creature's hope of living, that you should take the morsel Bhima throws aside, like a dog kept at the house.

Fire was set for them, poison was given, their wife was insulted, their land and their wealth were taken. What is a life kept up on what such men give? And even so this body of yours, wretched and clinging to life, is going from you though you do not wish it, worn through by age like an old garment. He is called steady who, detached and freed of his bonds, leaves this body when its purpose is spent, and goes where none knows. He is best among men who, having come to detachment here, whether by his own doing or another's, and possessed of himself, sets Hari in his heart and goes out from his house. So go now to the northern quarter, where your own people will not know where you have gone; for the time that comes after this mostly drags down whatever is good in a person.
