Then the revered Narada came with Tumburu; and rising and saluting him, and with his younger brothers making as though to honour him, he said: Revered one, I do not know where my elders have gone from here, nor where mother has gone, stricken, her sons killed, who is given to austerity. You, revered one, are as a helmsman on a shoreless sea, one who shows the further shore. Then the revered Narada, best of sages, spoke: Grieve for no one, king, since the world stands in the Lord's power. These worlds with their guardians carry their tribute to that ruler. It is he who brings beings together, and he who parts them.

As oxen are strung through the nose and tied by their own ropes to a long cord, so people, tied by their names to the cord of speech, carry their tribute to the ruler. As the joining and the parting of playthings here come about by the will of the one who plays, just so it is with people, by the Lord's will. Whether you hold the living person to be lasting, or not lasting, or neither of the two, in no case are they to be grieved over, except out of an affection born of delusion. So give up, dear one, this helplessness of yours that ignorance has made, the thought: how will those poor helpless ones get on without me?

This body of the five elements stands under time, under action, and under the strands. How can it protect others, any more than one already seized by a snake can protect another? Things without hands are food for those with hands, and the footless for the four-footed; there the small are food for the great. One living thing is the life of another. King, this Lord is the one Self of all selves, who sees by himself; he shines both within them and without. See him, who is made many by his maya. Great king, this same Lord, who brings beings into being, has now come down into this world in the form of time, for the undoing of those who hate the gods.

The work of the gods is done; he waits now for what remains. Until then, wait as well, for as long as the Lord is here.
