Look at these portents, tiger among men, in the sky, on the earth, and in the body itself: dreadful ones, telling of a fear not far off that bewilders the understanding. My thigh and eye and arm throb again and again, dear one, and there is a trembling in the heart. Close at hand, they will give me something unwelcome. This jackal, her face full of fire, howls at the rising sun; and this dog barks at me, dear one, without any fear of me. Beasts that should keep me on their right keep me on their left, and the other beasts keep me on their right, tiger among men; and I see my horses weeping. This pigeon is death's messenger; and the owl, and the owl that answers it with its cries, shake the mind: both sleepless, and wanting the world empty.
