1So Krsna's friend, dark Arjuna, questioned by his brother the king, his form the ground of many misgivings, wasted by his separation from Krsna, 2the lotuses of his face and heart drying up with grief, his brightness struck away, meditating on that mighty one alone, was not able to answer. 3With difficulty he steadied his sorrows, wiped his eyes with his hand, stricken by a longing of love that rose the higher for its object being out of sight; 4and remembering the friendship, the fellowship and the good will in the charioteering and the rest of it, he spoke to the king his elder brother in a voice breaking with tears.

Bhāgavata Vāhini· The Mahāprasthāna of the Pāṇḍavas
In plain words
14. The Mahāprasthāna of the Pāṇḍavas "Happily eating roots and tubers and the like, I will make my time blessed with holy karma. Or else, hand the kingdom over to virtuous, upright ministers, and take me along with you. In the forests, doing service to my grandfathers, I shall become blessed." So Parīkṣit went to each in turn — to his elder grandfather and to his younger grandfathers — clasping their feet and pleading; and no one could bear to look at him. They could not bear to hear those words. They could not endure the plight of that boy — a plight that would melt even stones. Somehow Dharmaja summoned his courage, swallowed the grief that came surging up, took Parīkṣit by the hands, seated him on his lap, and began to console him: "My child! You must not be so weak. You are a fortunate one, born in the Bharata line. A goat is not born from a lion's womb, is it! Your father, your mother, your grandfathers are great heroes, devoted to truth, true to their names. So it is not fitting for you to lament, having become so helpless. Mother, father, grandfathers — all of these, for you, are these Brahmins now; follow their counsel and rule the kingdom. Make your name meaningful. Do not lament for us." But however much Dharmaja said, Parīkṣit would not let go of his obstinacy, so full of Prema: "Grandfather! I am not one of such stature as to tell you anything. Even before I was born,
I lost my father. You raised me in every way, so that I lacked nothing of a father's Prema. Now, is it just of you to tie so great a burden of kingship on the head of a boy who still plays at games and songs? Rather than plunging me in such grief and going away, could you not have cut my throat with a sword and gone? Ah, Vidhi! What wrong did I ever do you, that — as though I had — the moment my father died you made me lifeless in the very womb? Why then did you not destroy this body in that same way? Was my life given back to me and nurtured only so that I should endure this horror?" And still he went on reproaching himself in all sorts of ways. Cowardice Is a Stain on Kṣatriyas Just then Arjuna came, closed the boy's mouth, kissed his head, and said: "My child! For you to babble like a coward in this way is a stain on us kṣatriyas. At an age even younger than yours we lost our father. We grew up and came of age under the protection of ascetics. At last, becoming recipients of our uncle's Prema, and after suffering many hardships, we ruled the kingdom. That very Protector who, at that age, raised us and brought us up and guided our lives all this while — that same Protector will protect you too. He will show you compassion. Do not lose heart; for some time follow the counsel of these ministers and the counsel of the Brahmins. After that, some things will come to be known to you yourself." Seeing Arjuna, his grandfather, consoling him in so many ways, Parīkṣit said: "Grandfather! Are you going away, making me an orphan, making me helpless, handing me over like a goat to the lion that is the kingdom? Well then, at least stay a little while, teach me some rules and procedures, and then go. 'Though I have no father, I have grandfathers, surely!' — so I lived freely, without a care; if my grandfathers too leave me, what will become of me? I had set all my hopes on you, and so soon you are plunging me in despair and going." So, weeping bitterly, he fell at his grandfather's feet and rolled there. Arjuna lifted Parīkṣit with both arms and set him on his hip. From Parīkṣit's
two lotus eyes came tears like pearls, wave upon wave; wiping them away, and shedding tears from his own eyes too, Arjuna said to the Brahmins standing before him: "Why do you stand here like this and grieve? Why do you too not give this boy fitting counsel and persuade him?" At these words that Arjuna spoke, the Brahmins and ministers, unable to hold back their grief, said: "O King! Each word of that tender child pierces straight into our hearts. His grief is turning us to stone. What can we say? What can we do?" — and they too began to grieve. The Pāṇḍavas Renounce the Kingdom Somehow gathering courage, Kṛpācārya, the family guru, came forward, held back the grief that came welling up, and, wiping the streams of tears with his upper cloth, said: "What would you have me say, Mahārāja? Nothing occurs to us. That very kingdom for which so great a struggle took place, for which lakhs and crores of lives were sacrificed, for which blood was shed — that kingdom you are today renouncing as if it were a blade of grass. Not a thousand years, not a hundred or two hundred years — in the end you have not ruled it even fifty years; seeing this, our Buddhis are growing inert. Who can say how the course of Time will go? The acts of great souls cannot be without inner meaning. We are unable to say anything. May the lords forgive us!" So saying, he stood with head bowed in grief. Sarvaṃ Kṛṣṇārpaṇam Then Dharmaja came forward: "Ācārya! All the karmas I performed were done solely in obedience to Kṛṣṇa's command; everything I offered for His pleasure. As He made me dance, so I danced. Neither I nor my brothers have any separate individuality at all. All Dharma has gone with the Lord.
What use is there in Dharmaja alone remaining? In this kingdom, in this world that Kali has entered, I cannot stay even a single minute. All of you must protect this boy and keep imparting fitting training and dīkṣā, so that he does not fall from the kingdom. See to it that he holds firm, without altering anything, both in the practice of Dharma and in the dignities handed down in the lineage, and that he does not become a stain on the family. From today onward, he is your child." As he was handing the boy into Kṛpācārya's hands, those gathered there and the grandfathers, together with Dharmaja himself, cried out aloud; like the roar of pralaya, their grief rose to the sky. After some time, he at once had Vajra brought and told him: "My child! From today, Parīkṣit is the emperor of this Bharata kingdom." Vajra saluted Parīkṣit in the manner due to an emperor. At that time the ministers and Brahmins present offered Parīkṣit the respectful salutations befitting an emperor. Then, taking Parīkṣit by the hand and taking Vajra's hand, Dharmaja said: "This is Vajra, the mainstay of the Yadu dynasty. I have made him king of the lands of Mathurā and Śūrasena." And he placed on his head a crown studded with gold and diamonds. Bringing the two together, he told them that both of them, as kings, must conduct themselves toward one another with mutual goodwill, like brothers. Calling Vajra, he said: "My child! Regard Parīkṣit as your uncle and look after him," and calling Parīkṣit: "My child! You must look upon Vajra as you would Aniruddha"; and telling them that both must rule without abandoning Dharma, regarding the welfare of the people as their very life-breath, all the Pāṇḍavas showered akṣata upon them. The Brahmins who had come chanted mantras. Auspicious instruments were played. Wiping their streams of tears, Vajra and Parīkṣit bowed to Dharmaja,
to the remaining Pāṇḍavas and to the gurus. The four grandfathers could not bear to look upon the faces of those dear children. Grief kept welling up. Kissing the heads of those boys, taking them up on their hips once more, and speaking words of courage, they set out for the forests in the clothes they stood in. Seeing this state of things, the citizens, kinsfolk and relations, the queens of the inner palace and the maidservants began to weep loudly. The people went and stood across the path of the great kings, fell at their feet and prayed. "We too will come with you," they pleaded. Some, however much they were told, would not listen, and ran right after them. The Pāṇḍavas were not looking at anyone. They were not listening to anyone's words. Fixing their aim on Kṛṣṇa, heeding neither path nor thicket, not turning back, giving no reply, they went on like blind men, like men possessed. Behind, with the maidservants, Draupadī was running on foot, calling her husbands one by one by name. Parīkṣit Mahārāja would not stop, however many held him; wailing, running along the streets, calling his grandfathers one by one by name, he went on — until the ministers stopped him and, consoling him and weeping themselves, were carrying him away. In this way they said nothing at all — neither "Don't" to those who followed after them, nor "Stop" on seeing those who were coming. Some hundreds of men and women went right after them, turning back from wherever they grew tired, while others went on following them. Among the women of the inner palace, some delicate ones who had never known the sun could not bear it, grew exhausted, and fell unconscious in the shade of trees. The maidservants brought water and whatever was needed and revived them; weeping over the parting, enduring terrible suffering in that most dreadful forest, they kept coming back. That whole road was filled with dust, and like clouds the dust
began to rise. Some, saying it was the dust of Dharmaja's feet, placed it on their heads and stayed right where they were. In this way, as the Pāṇḍavas passed beyond trees and hills and were hidden from sight, everyone stopped wherever they were, heaving sighs; and, pining in fullest grief, they returned to Hastināpura. The Pāṇḍavas vowed themselves to the mahāprasthāna — that is, going forth toward the northern direction without eating anything, without drinking, without taking rest. This itself is what is called mahāprasthāna.

In plain words
15. Parīkṣit's Righteous Rule Without looking anywhere at all, the Pāṇḍavas walked on until each one's body fell. In their hearts there was Kṛṣṇa's image, His līlās, His words — apart from these, they could give room to nothing else. For some distance Draupadī followed them, and grew exhausted. Her husbands did not even lift their eyes to her; though she pleaded, they did not so much as turn back to look. That great jewel among chaste and devoted wives, Draupadī, perceiving her husbands' vow, resolved within herself that the bond between them and herself, in these bodies, had now come to its end; and on the path she fell. Remembering Śyāmasundara, she merged into Him. In this very way the Pāṇḍavas too, carrying on their journey in the forest according to their vow, each fell at whatever spot his final hour drew near; they merged their life-breaths into Kṛṣṇa, who is the Paramātma, and gave their bodies to the earth. In the end all the Pāṇḍavas, through contemplation of the nectar of Kṛṣṇa's Name, merged into the Ātma, which is immortality itself. The Intimate Bond between King and People Now, upon the throne of the Bharata dynasty, King Parīkṣit — devoted to justice, a soul of Dharma, tender toward his people and as dear to them as life itself — carried on his rule. Whatever undertaking Parīkṣit set his mind to, he would first call to mind Kṛṣṇa
and his own forefathers, bow to them inwardly, and pray morning and evening that, abiding within him, they would guide all his affairs along the right path. He regarded himself as the heart of the people, and the people as the limbs of his own body. His kingdom gained such renown that in it even the wind would not stir people's belongings — that is, neither fear of thieves nor any other unlawful, unjust or improper act ever took place there. Even so, if anywhere at all even the slightest wrong was heard to have happened, he would impose a most severe punishment and put fitting safeguards in place so that such things would not happen again. Because of this righteous rule, the rains fell in due season, the crops grew abundantly, and the people passed their days pleasantly, in happiness and peace, free from fear. As Parīkṣit went on governing the kingdom in this way, he came of age; and the ministers, the family preceptor and certain other elders gathered and firmly resolved that Parīkṣit should be made a householder. Waiting for the right moment, they submitted this to the emperor, received his consent, and sent Brahmins to his maternal uncle, the respected Uttara. Uttara too, with boundless joy, gave his consent in writing. Honouring the consent of both sides, the auspicious times were fixed, and at the sacred hour the wedding of Parīkṣit and Uttara's daughter Irāvatī took place with the greatest splendour. Queen Irāvatī was a great jewel among chaste women, endowed with every good quality and wholly devoted to her husband. When she heard of the people's sufferings, she grieved as though they were her own. Mingling freely with the women of the city, she herself learned of their welfare, told her husband, and had fitting help and provisions arranged for them. Among the women she gave
teachings of good conduct; and not only that, she also ordained fitting safeguards for that purpose and protected them. Whoever came, she received them kindly and took them in; free of pride, a very goddess of forbearance, Annapūrṇā herself in person — such was the fame won by this Lakṣmī of the household. Under the rule of this virtuous couple, women and men alike lived peaceful lives, lacking nothing. Parīkṣit, for his part, had yajñas, yāgas and other sacred rites performed, offered worship to all the deities, and saw to it that faith in God took deep root among the people. For those in the forests — the treasuries of tapas, the foremost of the ṛṣis — he himself personally oversaw fitting safeguards, doing them himself and having them done, so that no obstacle whatever would arise to hinder each one's sādhana. While they ruled the realm of Bharata in this way, like Pārvatī and Parameśvara, the news that Irāvatī had conceived spread through the kingdom, carried by the women in all four directions. Hearing this joyful news, the people, overflowing with joy, prayed daily in their own homes that their emperor might have a son endowed with every virtue, pre-eminent in steadfastness in Dharma, and blessed with a full span of life. So intense in those days was the people's Prema for the king. Not seeking even their own welfare, they held the king's welfare to be their own; they guarded the king as though keeping him within their very eyes. Seeing and hearing of the Prema and trust the people had for him, Parīkṣit would shed tears of joy and rejoice within himself: 'All this is not the effect of my own governance; it is the gracious gift of my forefathers' Prema, the nectar of Lord Kṛṣṇa's grace.' And he, for his part, never once showed the slightest neglect or Ahaṅkāra in matters of the people's welfare. He looked upon the people as his own children.
The Birth of Janamejaya The bond between king and people grew day by day into such a sacred story, and Parīkṣit's kingdom was winning such fame that one would say 'no' even to Vaikuṇṭha in its place. At an auspicious moment, the revered queen Irāvatī gave birth to a fine son. When the news became known throughout the kingdom, ascetics, great ṛṣis and the foremost of scholars, hearing the good news, sent messages of blessing and blessed the king; and with a thousand tongues they extolled how the kingdom had gained a new light, and how — so his birth star showed — the child would win good renown for his father and gain the people's esteem. Brahmins were summoned, an auspicious hour for the naming ceremony was fixed, and in the presence of the elders the boy was named Janamejaya with the greatest splendour. To the Brahmins who came and to the sumaṅgalīs, as Kṛpācārya directed, he gave gifts and charities. He held feasts. He gave cows in gift, together with ornaments of gold. When the emperor Dharmarāja set out on the Great Departure, he had entrusted the infant Parīkṣit to their family preceptor, the revered Kṛpācārya; because of this, King Parīkṣit's rule proceeded in all affairs only after obtaining the Ācārya's permission. Without the consent of Brahmins learned in the Vedas, or without the consent of the Ācārya, the king would not undertake even the smallest task. 'As the King, So the Subjects' It was for this very reason that the munis and maharṣis of the kingdom, desiring the king's welfare in their hearts and from time to time sending him messages of blessing, would extol the happiness and peace of the kingdom's people and the king's motherly tenderness toward them.
By the strength of the blessings of such elders, in accordance with the directions of the gurus, and through the glance of God's compassion, he was able to conquer all the kings on earth. After his digvijaya, he performed on the banks of the Gaṅgā a full three aśvamedha yāgas. Because of these, King Parīkṣit's fame spread not only through the realm of Bharata but across the whole globe. With a thousand tongues they praised him as the tilaka of the Bharata dynasty. Under his rule there was not a single king who was not subject to him. All the kings of the whole globe bore his command upon their heads and ruled accordingly. For these reasons, King Parīkṣit had no occasion either to go to war with anyone or even to think of needing to conquer. In this way, he began to move freely through all the regions of the earth. Yet from time to time, seeing the onslaughts of Kali, he would attack them and overcome them, trying in many ways to drive Kali out. Wherever King Parīkṣit went, he would hear of the fame of his forebears — where, and on which occasions, Kṛṣṇa had protected his grandfathers and grandmothers — and, hearing those things, he would shed tears of joy, and grieve somewhat that it had not been his lot to experience such closeness with the Paramātma. Hearing the news that Kali had entered his kingdom and was causing certain karmas contrary to Dharma to be done, he became absorbed in thinking how he should drive it out. At last, discerning what sort of places are the ones it enters, he did away with such places; and, so as to leave Kali no opportunity to enter, he would consult with the ministers and the family preceptors on measures such as firmly establishing certain special laws. 'When, among the people, feelings contrary to Dharma
rise up in the heart — is it not so? — Kali enters at that very place,' said the ministers. King Parīkṣit replied: 'This is not entirely right. It is only after Kali has entered that feelings contrary to Dharma sprout in the hearts of the people of my kingdom. The people are not at fault in this in the least. "As the king, so the subjects." The king's incapacity, his lack of Ātma-viśvāsa and the absence of the power of divine grace: these three together are what open the doors for Kali's entry. Where these three defects are absent, even if Kali enters, he cannot bring anyone under his sway. Therefore stern measures must be taken, fit to bring Ātma-viśvāsa, well-ordered governance and the gracious gift of God's grace to the kingdom.' So resolving, he himself, in person, together with the ministers, throughout the kingdom, night and day, established fitting methods and regulations to drive Kali out — that is, to do away with injustice, lawlessness, improper conduct, untruth and violence — and at last made his journeys of victory to the lands of Bhadrāśva, Ketumāla, Bhārata, Uttara Kuru, Kiṃpuruṣa and the rest.

In plain words
20. The Special Graces of Kṛṣṇa upon Draupadī "Remembering those special graces of Kṛṣṇa that were giving her inexhaustible garments, Draupadī stood transfixed; her tears flowed in channels, and she cried out like one possessed, 'Kṛṣṇa! Kṛṣṇa!' Her crying struck those in the midst of the assembly with fear and alarm; as though wondering, 'Has Śakti Herself descended in this form?', they could not look upon her divine radiance. Draupadī Lets Her Hair Fall Loose "Just then Kṛṣṇa Paramātma appeared before your grandmother Draupadī. 'Sister! While I am here, why fear? It is precisely to wipe out these men blinded by arrogance that I was born. I will make the light of the Pāṇḍavas' fame shine. Be comforted.' The moment He spoke these words of peace, she washed Kṛṣṇa's lotus-feet with her kohl-darkened tears, covered the feet with the tresses of her hair that had spread loose over them, and, wholly absorbed in Him, sank to the ground. Her surge of Ānanda caused great astonishment in all in the assembly. Then Gopāla placed His divine, auspicious hand upon her head and blessed her: 'Rise! Set right your loosened hair! Think of what is to happen next. Go to your husbands.' Hearing these words that Kṛṣṇa Paramātma spoke, Draupadī — like a serpent that has spread its hood — her loosened hair
falling over her face, and her radiant eyes flashing like a streak of lightning, she sprang up and stood in the midst of the assembly: "Kṛṣṇa! A torn cloth may be sewn, but it cannot be made whole again. For a maiden of noble family, kanyādāna happens once only; it does not happen again and again. Curdled milk, whatever one does, can never become good milk. An elephant's tusks, once come out, do not go back in. Just so, these locks of Draupadī, once loosened, are loosened. These tresses, touched by the defiled hands of these wicked men, can never again become, as before, the bound braid of an auspicious wife," she said. Draupadī's Vow All in the assembly, put to shame, bowed their heads in embarrassment. Then Kṛṣṇa Paramātma, not letting it rest, asked: "Sister! If so, when will you bind up your hair again as before? Hair let loose in this way is so very dreadful to look upon, is it not!" Then the heroic wife Draupadī, changing her tone to something like a lion's roar, said: "Śyāmasundara! That wicked man who with his sinful hands touched my hair and dragged me here — on the day his head is shattered to pieces with dogs tearing at it, and his wife, become a widow, lets her hair fall loose and laments — on that day alone will my hair again receive its dressing. Until then this hair must remain just so." The moment she swore this vow, the elders gathered in the assembly and the messengers of Dharma covered their ears and raised cries: "May it be calmed! May it be calmed! May Draupadī, a jewel among great virtuous women, forgive!" Where Dharma Is, There God Is Dhṛtarāṣṭra's heart sank. Though on the surface the Kauravas appeared like great heroes, deep within them too storms of fear and panic blew. This
word must surely come true — a kind of fear flared up in everyone. Fittingly, Śyāmasundara, consoling her, said: "Daughter of Drupada! So let it be. I shall bring to an end the wicked men who made your husbands' hearts burn with anguish. Your tongue, which since the day you were born has never spoken untruth even in jest — the word you spoke today will not fail to bear fruit. Yours is the speech of truth; for Satya, victory is certain." Thus Kṛṣṇa Paramātma gave your grandmother Draupadī the assurance of protection; and in the end, destroying the Kauravas utterly and proclaiming the Pāṇḍavas' Dharma to the world, He taught the world the sacred maxim: 'Where Dharma is, there God is. Where God is, there alone is victory.' Do you see how great your grandfathers were? For their becoming recipients of the grace of Kṛṣṇa Paramātma, who is God Himself, their conduct in Dharma and their truthful speech alone were the root cause. Therefore, even if one performs no rites whatever in the world — yajñas, yāgas and the like — Truth and Dharma alone can stand for jīvas as a fine raft carrying them across the ocean of saṃsāra. They can bring one to the shore called Mukti. Otherwise, how could it be that that great sage Durvāsa, endowed with mighty power of tapas, went at the Kauravas' instigation to your grandfathers as they lived in exile in the forest, and though he laid many plots with the resolve to reduce your grandfathers to ashes by whatever means, did not succeed — and, realising that the power of Bhakti, which is prayer to God, is greater even than the power of tapas, praised the Pāṇḍavas?" As Vyāsa was proudly describing the Pāṇḍavas' Bhakti and prapatti, King Parīkṣit raised his head in great astonishment: "What? What? Durvāsa tried to deceive my grandfathers, and was himself put to shame? Ah! Were my grandfathers endowed with greater power than even the great ṛṣis? How fortunate I am indeed, born in the lineage of such men!" And he prayed: "Svāmī! Tell me how Durvāsa tried to deceive my grandfathers." "Mahārāja! Through the gracious protection of Gopāla, your grandfathers the Pāṇḍavas, in the forest, with every comfort for contentment, a fine name and renown
were earning. To the Pāṇḍavas, the forest felt more pleasant than Hastināpura. "Just as a flower of fine fragrance, whether held in the right hand or in the left, keeps its scent unchanged, in one and the same state — just so, the hearts of good people, whether in the forests or in the sky, in a village or in a town, on a hilltop or in midstream: their unrelenting purity never changes, to the very end. Of that, your grandfathers are living witnesses. The joy and peace of those on the good path cause grief to the wicked. As the koel's songs grate on the ears of crows, so your grandfathers' splendour in the forest kept troubling the wicked Duryodhana and Duḥśāsana. But what could they do? Everything that could be done, they had done. Every torment that could be inflicted, they had inflicted. Every abuse that could be hurled, they had hurled. In the end they drove them out of the kingdom and sent them to the forest as mere empty sacks. In their eyes, perhaps, they thought the Pāṇḍavas' bodies were empty sacks — but in truth they were solid sacks. Your grandfathers' bodies were bodies filled by Gopāla, the Lord of the cosmos. "To fight against such bodies is possible for no one whatever. That is why, not meddling with those bodies, they could seize by fraudulent deeds only material possessions. And as for playing dice again? Your grandfathers had no property or possessions left at all. Very well! Resolving to divide your grandfathers by stirring up quarrels between one and another, they created many unseemly suspicions. But since they were brothers who knew the truth, and there was no room in your grandfathers for such wicked thoughts, that too came to nothing. The Kauravas Incite Durvāsa against the Pāṇḍavas Whatever they did, no ruin came to the Pāṇḍavas — and this grief kept burning in the Kauravas like a forest fire. At their wits' end, at the very time when they were fretting in anguish,
with a band of ten thousand disciples, the great sage Durvāsa — anger itself in bodily form — entered Hastināpura, to undertake the four-month Cāturmāsya vow. Because the Kauravas knew well Durvāsa's powers and capacities, and his svabhāva and conduct, they deeply nursed within them the resolve to win his favour and, through him, have your grandfathers the Pāṇḍavas killed. Whatever the great sage asked, however he directed, they did just so and had it done; they allowed no shortfall, no disappointment, no anger to arise in Durvāsa or in his band of disciples; and spending whatever wealth was needed, they served him for four months with sumptuous food. Whatever harsh words the great ṛṣi spoke, they stood patiently with folded hands, accepting every one, and somehow they made the great sage content. One day Durvāsa, having partaken of the sumptuous food and being satisfied, sat on his seat and, with a gracious face, encouraged him: "O King! Your services have satisfied me greatly. Whatever you want — even the hardest boon, it is all right — ask, and I will grant it." Then Duryodhana, rejoicing that the moment for his desire to bear fruit had arrived, and making a show of great humility and obedience, said: "Svāmī! Your being pleased is itself equal, for me, to ten million boons. That alone is enough. I have no lack whatever of wealth and riches. Even if I were now crowned sovereign of the three worlds, I would have no peace or joy. Apart from this one lack — that at this moment of attending upon such a great personage and offering him hospitality, our brothers the Pāṇḍavas are not at home — I have no other wish. May you grant them too this great good fortune, and see them through to their end! Just as you came to receive my hospitality, so too go with your myriad disciples to our elder brother Dharmaja, and if you grant them too this fine opportunity of hospitality, that alone
would be enough. Dharmaja, the eldest of our line, bound by the noose of Dharma, went off to the forest without heeding us, though we said no. I have heard that even there he daily gives hospitality to hundreds of thousands of guests and visitors, and that they hold great feasts. He can serve you with food a thousand times more abundant than here. So, if you would deign to grace me, fulfil this one wish of mine and make me blessed," he said, and fell at his feet. At this Durvāsa burst out laughing: "Duryodhana! In accordance with your wish, I shall set out right now with my ten thousand disciples and receive the hospitality of your brother Dharmaja." And ordering his disciples, 'Be all ready!', the sage set out for the forest. Meanwhile Duryodhana, making a show of great humility and obedience, knelt with folded hands at the feet of Durvāsa Maharṣi and begged that he grant one more request. The Maharṣi, with a smiling face, gave him leave: "My dear! Ask, whatever it is." Then Duryodhana, nursing within him evil scheming and a wicked Buddhi, with the resolve to have the Pāṇḍavas killed, said: "Svāmī! You are going to receive Dharmaja's hospitality. But grant my wish: if you reach there after Draupadī has eaten, you will be able to behold their magnificent Bhakti and power. So go somewhat late, and at the time when they have all finished their meal and are resting, if you ask Dharmaja, 'Give food to us and our disciples,' you will have given me great joy. You will have made me blessed." With that, he bowed.
Bhāgavata Vāhini· The Episode of Durvāsa
In plain words
21. The Episode of Durvāsa Durvāsa agreed to this and, saying, "Very well! I shall do just so," set out. Duryodhana's request was not without a certain hidden purpose. It was this: once, at daybreak, pleased by the Pāṇḍavas' prayers, Sūrya had graciously bestowed on them an inexhaustible vessel. It was the custom of that great jewel among virtuous women, Draupadī, to eat only after the Pāṇḍavas had eaten; and as Sūrya had granted it, until she herself had eaten, the vessel would not diminish however much was taken from it. "Not only that: except once a day, its contents cannot be served out two or three times over. Once, before Draupadī has eaten, however many lakhs and crores it is served to the whole day long, it does not diminish. That is to say, if even the slightest bit of the earlier food remains in that vessel, through it as much food as is needed can grow; that is the power of that vessel. Durvāsa's Arrival at an Untimely Hour "It was precisely because he had noted this that Duryodhana made that request. After Draupadī has eaten, she herself would scour the vessel clean and set it aside; not the least remnant would be left in it. If at such a time the great ṛṣi should seek a meal, they would be unable to satisfy the great ṛṣi. Then the great ṛṣi's anger
would surely arise; he would curse the Pāṇḍavas; the plague of the Pāṇḍavas would be gone once and for all, and from then on he could live in peace — such was the evil thinking of that Duryodhana. "But the Pāṇḍavas were not people who took refuge in others, were they! They had taken refuge in the Paramātma alone. Against such as these, no great ṛṣis' curses whatever can do anything at all. When Sarveśvara, the all-protecting Lord of all, is Himself on the Pāṇḍavas' side, would they ever be crushed down utterly at the hands of those evil-minded … people? Those rogues did not realize the truth that 'Let a man think one thing — God thinks another.' Be that as it may. In keeping with Duryodhana's wish, Durvāsa — at the time when Draupadī had eaten, the vessel had been cleaned, and they sat chewing betel with the Pāṇḍavas in front of the leaf-hut — Durvāsa arrived with a band of ten thousand disciples. Seeing the great ṛṣi's arrival, Dharmaja sprang up at once, washed his feet, worshipped him and bowed, and saying, "I am blessed. Today is a most auspicious day — the darśana of great ṛṣis!", shedding tears of joy, he stood with joined hands; right beside him the brothers and Draupadī, bowing with heads lowered, stood humble and obedient. Durvāsa, somewhat weary, as though worn out by the exertion of the journey, said irritably, "Dharmaja! We shall go perform our bath, sandhyā and the other rites, and come back. Get a meal ready for me together with the ten thousand disciples," and with that they set straight off for the river to bathe. As soon as he heard those words, Dharmaja sank in dismay. His heart quaked. Going inside and consulting with Draupadī, and learning that the vessel had been washed clean and put away, they sank into thought in every possible way — 'what way out now?' — and for ten thousand people at that! Crying, "Alas, O God! What is to befall us today!", each of them collapsed in despair right where he was. Since Draupadī was the Lakṣmī of the household, feeding the guests who came was a joy to her. But this was an untimely hour. In the forest, food cannot be had on the instant, after all!
Therefore she sank still deeper into worry: "Those who have come are no ordinary people. It is Durvāsa Maharṣi! His power and capacities are known to the whole world; should he but will it, he can reduce us to ashes in a minute! What harm is going to befall my husbands today?" So that housewife sank deep within herself and pined away. Draupadī's Cry of Anguish Melted Kṛṣṇa's Heart Unable to think of anything, she at last reflected, 'In a time of calamity, who is there to protect but God?', and, remembering Kṛṣṇa: 'Gopāla! Today, to protect my husbands, to remove this calamity that has come upon us, and to satisfy the ṛṣis, I have no refuge but you, no one else' — and with tears flowing in streams, she began to call upon Hari in anguish. She prayed to Śyāmasundara in every possible way. At last, saying that whatever calamity or humiliation might befall her she would bear it, but let Him protect her husbands and preserve her māṅgalya, she wept aloud in terrible grief. The Pāṇḍavas outside, hearing that wailing, fell into still greater distress and, pining away, they too thought of Kṛṣṇa and prayed: 'Nandanandana! You have averted so many calamities. All this time, like the eyelid guarding the eye, even in the dense forests, never letting go of your compassion, you have protected us. Will you, today alone, subject us to such a plight? However many sins we may have, forgive us, and bring contentment to the great ṛṣi and his band of disciples.' The Pāṇḍavas' prayer and Draupadī's cry of anguish melted the heart of Kṛṣṇa in Mathurā. It set Gopāla in motion from there. Just then, the sound of footsteps was heard. Wondering whether Durvāsa's band of disciples had come back, having finished their bath and the rest, the Pāṇḍavas — turned to water where they stood — raised their heads and looked; and as Śyāmasundara, smiles brimming over, His pītāmbara trailing on the ground, entered the leaf-hut with a gentle smile, the Pāṇḍavas saw Him and cried out, "Kṛṣṇa! Kṛṣṇa!"
Hearing that sound, Draupadī, not knowing what was happening, came outside in agitation and, looking, saw Gopāla. With astonishment and joy she was for a moment lost to herself, knowing nothing; at last, thinking, 'This is Gopāla's own duty of protecting His devotees,' she ran to Him, fell at His feet, washed His feet with tears flowing in streams, and prayed, 'Preserve my māṅgalya and satisfy the great ṛṣis.' Not heeding her words in the least, the Sūtradhāra of the drama, acting like one gripped by hunger, said, "Sister! Draupadī! What is this weeping? First satisfy my hunger; after that you may ask for whatever you wish. Serve me a little food at once" — and seeing Kṛṣṇa holding out His cupped hands, Draupadī said, 'Kṛṣṇa! Is this the time for testing! Protect us without delay,' and, wiping away her tears with the end of her sari, she spread out its fold and prayed Him to grant her her husbands as alms. At that, Kṛṣṇa, stroking Draupadī's head, said, 'Sister! Women shed tears over every little thing — it is their wont; tears are very dear to women. Tears do not fill the stomach. They do not get the work done. Still, tell me the reason for your weeping today. I shall hear it and enjoy it.' Seeing Kṛṣṇa speak so teasingly, Draupadī said, 'Gopāla! You are the second beggar today! Even if you are not given food, you would not grow angry and curse. But another beggar has come with ten thousand disciples, crying "hunger, hunger!", and is looking to devour us. See that we are not burnt to ashes in the fire of his wrath. In this forest not even a single grain is to be had by me. How can such as I satisfy the hunger of so many guests at so untimely an hour?' — and so she explained the matter in full. Then Gopāla burst out laughing: "Draupadī! Where are they? Ten thousand guests, you said, didn't you! Not a single one is visible to my eye; looking at your words, I feel like laughing. Leaving aside the child on your hip, are you fretting over those in the hall? First satisfy my hunger; afterwards, the matter of those who are somewhere else
can be seen to" — so saying, He insisted, and truly acted as if He were hungry. Draupadī understood, and said, "Svāmī! I served the cooked food to everyone, I too have eaten, and I have washed the Sūrya-given vessel spotlessly clean and put it away. How now shall I satisfy your hunger? In whom shall I take refuge? Other than you, neither this Pāñcālī nor the Pāṇḍavas have any other refuge, have they! If you yourself, who know all this, make us weep like this, what is there to say of others!" — and she shed even more streams of tears. Gopāla, leaving off the test, asked, 'Draupadī! Come, bring here the vessel in which you cooked this morning; if even a little food is found in it, I shall be satisfied.' Then Draupadī went inside, brought the vessel she had washed clean and put away, and placed it in Gopāla's hand. Gopāla examined the vessel closely and, looking, saw a leaf — a small piece — sticking at the neck of the vessel, and asked, "Draupadī! Did you make a dish of greens today, eh?" By Kṛṣṇa's Power, Durvāsa's Hunger Is Appeased At this Draupadī exclaimed, "What! A leaf seen in the vessel I scoured? This is nothing but your Māyā; whatever work I do, I do it spotlessly." As Draupadī came up laughing, He said, "Look! One leaf has been found in this vessel! This can satisfy not only my hunger but the whole world of moving and unmoving beings!" — and saying this, He took the leaf with His finger, placed it on His tongue, and, saying, "Ah! My hunger is appeased," He belched. Meanwhile, Durvāsa and his ten thousand disciples, bathing in the river, found their bellies full and themselves in a state where they could not move; the distress of the hunger with which they had been burning even before this was relieved; satisfaction and joy arose in them; and making signs to one another among themselves, they said, 'Abbā! Our bellies are full. There is no room even for a single grain of rice to go in. If we go to Dharmaja at this time, he will have prepared every kind of dish. If we do not eat, Dharmaja will not accept it. There is no room left in our bellies to eat for the sake of his satisfaction; what
to do?' — pondering thus, they at last remembered Ambarīṣa's curse, and warned Durvāsa. At this, Durvāsa too followed their counsel: he blessed Dharmaja from right where he was, and, without telling anyone, they took to their heels, taking another path through the forest, and went away. Meanwhile Gopāla called Bhīma and told him to go and escort Durvāsa and his disciples, who had gone to bathe, back for the meal. Then Bhīma went in a single stride to the riverbank; seeing him, the disciples tried to run away. Chasing them, Bhīma went up to Durvāsa and entreated him, 'Svāmī! The meal is ready for you. You must come without fail — it is my elder brother's command." To this Durvāsa replied, 'Bhīma! We cannot. We are in a state where we cannot eat even a single grain; let us go. You will have every auspiciousness. While you rule the entire earth as sole sovereigns under a single umbrella, I shall come once and partake of your hospitality. Whoever, desiring your ruin, sent me to you with sinful intent — they will be utterly destroyed.' So blessing them, they went away with serene faces. "Did you see, Parīkṣit! Your grandfathers' Bhakti and prapatti, and the power of Kṛṣṇa's grace — they are matched only by themselves; no one else can equal them. Such people do not exist in the world." As Vyāsa, with the utmost joy, was telling Parīkṣit thus of the Pāṇḍavas' power and capacities and of the grace-gifts of Kṛṣṇa Paramātma, Parīkṣit too listened, lost to himself; at times he sank into wonder and anguish, and whenever he remembered his grandfathers' sufferings his body thrilled with horripilation, and, grieving, he shed streams of tears.
