Patala, they recite, is the sole of his foot; Rasatala his heel and the front of his foot; Mahatala the ankles of the world-maker; and Talatala the shanks of the Person. Sutala the two knees of him whose form is the universe; Vitala and Atala his two thighs; Mahitala his loins, lord of the earth; and the lake of his navel, they call the floor of the sky. His chest is the host of lights; his neck Mahar; his mouth Jana; Tapas they know for the brow of the first Person; and Satya for the heads of him who has a thousand heads. Indra and the bright ones with him they call his arms; the quarters his ears, and sound his hearing; the two Asvins the nostrils of the supreme one, and scent his smelling; his mouth the kindled fire.

The sky is his two eyes, and the sun became his seeing; day and night are both the eyelashes of Visnu; the lifting of his brows is the seat of the highest; the waters are his palate, and taste is his tongue. The metres, they say, are the head of the Endless; Yama his fang, and the arts of affection his teeth; his laughter is that maya which drives people mad; and the letting go of his sidelong glance is this bringing forth that has no easy end.
