23See: the crane woman, wicked as she was, gave him the deadly poison in her breast, meaning to kill him, and got for it the standing that belongs to a nurse. To what other kind one should we go for shelter? 24I hold that even the antigods are the Lord's own, though their minds are settled on the road of rage against the lord of the three, since in the fighting they saw the son of Tarksya, and on his shoulder him whose weapon is the fine-naveled one, bearing down on them. 25The Bhagavan, asked by the unborn and meaning to do the earth good, was born to Vasudeva in Devaki, in the prison of the Bhoja king. 26Then his father, in dread of Kamsa, carried him from here to Nanda's Vraja, and there for eleven years he lived with Bala, his flame kept hidden.
27Ringed by the calf-herd boys, the mighty one grazed the calves and played in the groves along the Yamuna, where the trees were thick with calling birds. 28He showed the people of Vraja the doings of childhood, which were worth the watching: crying as though he cried, laughing, and looking about him like a lion cub not yet awake to itself.
