3As those two were being born, many portents fell there, in the sky, on the earth and in the space between, bringing great fear upon the world. 4The earth shook with its mountains. Every quarter blazed. Meteors and thunderbolts fell, and comets that bring distress. 5A wind blew that was harsh to the touch, raising howls again and again, tearing up the lords of the trees, an army of whirlwinds with dust for its banner. 6With masses of cloud laughing out in lightning, the constellations lost, and darkness come into the sky, not a step could be seen. 7The sea cried out in dejection, its waves high and its belly churning; and the rivers with their wells were troubled, their lotuses withered.
8Again and again haloes formed about the moon and the sun with Rahu; and crashes like the noise of chariots arose out of the caverns. 9Within the villages she-jackals, vomiting fierce fire from their mouths, howled ill fortune, along with the cries of jackals and of owls. 10Raising their necks, the dogs let out all manner of cries, now like singing and now like weeping, from this side and from that. 11And asses, Ksatta, striking the ground with their hard hooves, maddened and violent with their braying, ran about in herds. 12Birds, frightened by the asses, flew up crying from their nests; and the cattle in the pens and in the forest passed dung and urine.
13Cows were terrified and gave blood for milk. Clouds rained pus. The images of the gods wept. Trees fell where there was no wind. 14Other planets, blazing, passed over the most auspicious planets and the constellations in a backward course, and fought with one another. 15Seeing these and other great portents, the people, who did not know their truth, all but the sons of Brahma, were afraid and thought the universe was being dissolved.
