Suta, when Svayambhuva Manu had taken his seat on the earth as his standing ground, what doors did he set up as a road for those who would be born after him? The Ksatta, great among the Lord's own, was Krsna's friend and belonged to him alone. He gave up his elder brother, and his brother's sons with him, because they had done wrong against Krsna. Born of Dvaipayana's body, he was not less than him in greatness. He took shelter in Krsna with his whole self, and followed after those who were given to Krsna. Made stainless by his going from ford to ford, what did he ask Maitreya, when he came to him at Kusavarta and found him sitting there, the best of those who know what is real?

Suta, as those two talked together, spotless accounts came flowing out that kill what is ill, like the waters of the Ganga, whose resting place is Hari's lotus feet. Tell us those, and may it go well with you: they are of him whose great deeds are worth the telling. What man who knows a taste could ever have enough of drinking the deathless liquor of Hari's play? Asked in this way by the sages of Naimisa, Ugrasravas, who had given his inward self over to the Bhagavan, said to them: Then listen.
