Seeing a house like that with a heart not much pleased, Kardama, who knows what lies in the mind of every creature, spoke to her himself. Bathe in this pool, timid one, and then climb into this flying palace. This ford was made by the white one, and it carries men's wishes through to their end. Taking her husband's word, she of the waterlily eyes, wearing a garment stained with dust and her hair gone into a single braid, her body covered over with the mud of dirt, her breasts discoloured, went down into the lake of the Sarasvati, whose water is kind. Inside the lake, in a house, she saw ten hundred girls, all of them in the first of youth and smelling of the blue lotus.

Seeing her, the women rose all at once and said with folded hands: We are here to work for you. Tell us: what shall we do? Those givers of honour bathed the high-minded woman with a costly bath and gave her a pair of garments of fine linen, spotless and new, and ornaments of the greatest price, choice and full of light, and food having every good quality, and a drink that was nectar-wine.
