So addressed by Kapila, the lord of creatures went round him in reverence and, glad at heart, went straight to the forest. He took up the vow of silence with the self alone for his refuge. Attached to nothing, without a fire and without a house, the sage wandered the earth. He set his mind on Brahman, which is beyond what is and what is not, which lights up the strands and has none of its own, and is known by a single-hearted devotion. Without I-making, without any mine, past the pairs, seeing all alike, seeing his own self, turned inward with his thought stilled, steady as the sea when its waves have gone down;

having found himself in Vasudeva, the Bhagavan, who knows everything and is the self turned within, by the highest state of devotion, his bondage undone; he saw the self, the Bhagavan, standing in all beings, and he saw all beings in the Bhagavan and in the self as well. Free of wanting and of hating, with a mind the same everywhere, and joined by devotion to the Bhagavan, he reached the way that belongs to the Bhagavan.
