1Bhagavan said: King's daughter, I will tell you the marks of the yoga that has a seed, the rule by which the mind grows clear and takes the true road. 2Doing one's own duty as far as one can, and turning back from what goes against dharma; being content with what fate gives; worshipping the feet of one who knows the self; 3leaving off the ways of village life, and taking delight in what leads to release; eating measured and clean food, and keeping always to a lonely and safe place; 4doing no harm, telling the truth, not stealing, taking no more than is needed; chastity, austerity, cleanness, the reciting of what one has learned, and the worship of the Person;
5silence, a seat mastered and held, steadiness, the slow mastering of the breath, and the drawing of the senses back from their objects into the heart by the mind; 6the holding of the breath by the mind at one of its own stations; the thinking upon the play of him whom nothing hinders; and so the settling of the self. 7By these roads and by others let a man slowly yoke with his understanding the ruined mind that goes the untrue road, having mastered the breath and never letting himself grow slack.
