As a mortal is known to be apart from his son and from his wealth, though he thinks of them as himself, so is the person apart from the body and the rest. As fire is apart from the brand, though it is thought of as being the brand itself, or the spark, or the smoke that rises out of it, so the self is apart, the watcher, the Bhagavan who is called Brahman, apart from the elements, the senses, the inner instrument, the ground, and what is called the living one. Let him see the self in all beings, and all beings in the self, with no sense of anything other, and see that they are one self with him, as one sees it among the elements.

As one fire is known as many in the fuels it burns in, because those fuels differ in their strands, so is the self while it stands in nature. So, having got the better of this nature of his own, shining and made of the real and the unreal and hard to make out, he stands in his own true form.
