Bhagavan said: The yoga of devotion is of many kinds and comes about by many roads, bright one; and by the road of a man's own nature and strand his feeling for it is divided. One who is set upon doing harm, or upon show, or upon grudging, who is full of rage, and who brings me a feeling with a divided eye: he belongs to darkness. One who is set upon what the senses want, or upon fame, or upon lordship, and worships me in an image and the rest, holding me apart: he belongs to passion. One who worships to be rid of his works, or to lay them on the highest, or because what is worshipful ought to be worshipped, and holds me apart: he belongs to clarity.

When at the mere hearing of my qualities the mind goes toward me, who lie in the cave of everything, and does not break off, as the water of the Ganga goes to the sea: that is spoken of as the mark of the yoga of devotion that is beyond the strands, a devotion to the highest Person with nothing prompting it and nothing standing between. To live in the same world, to have like power, to be near, to have the same form, even to be one with me: though these are offered, people do not take them if serving me is not in them. That is what is called the yoga of devotion, and it is spoken of as the last thing: by it a man goes right past the three strands and comes to my own state.
