36The lord of creatures, seeing his own daughter and overborne by the beauty of her, ran after her when she became a doe, taking the form of a stag, with his shame gone. 37Among those he made, and those made by them, and those made in turn by these, what man keeps his understanding unbroken, except the seer Narayana, here where maya is made of woman? 38See the strength of this maya of mine that is made of woman, which conquers the conquerors of the quarters and puts them under her foot by nothing more than the lifting of a brow. 39One who would climb to the highest reach of yoga should never keep company with women. For a man who has come, by serving me, into the gaining of himself, they call her the door of hell.
40The woman, made by the god, is maya coming on slowly. Let a man look at her as his own death, like a well that has been covered over with grass. 41One who has come to womanhood through clinging to a woman takes for a husband, out of confusion, this maya of mine that comes on as a bull, and that gives her wealth and children and a house; 42let her know him rather to be her own death, brought upon her by fate in the shape of husband and children and house, as the hunter's singing is death to the deer.
