Vidura's question· Verses 1–3

Why did Daksa, who was tender to his daughter, make enmity with Bhava, the best of those of good character, and set his own daughter Sati at nothing? Who could hate him, the teacher of things moving and unmoving, who has no quarrel with anyone, whose shape is at peace, who takes his pleasure in the self? How can anyone hate the great god of the world? Tell me this, brahmin: what the enmity was between the son-in-law and the father-in-law, on account of which Sati gave up the breath that is so hard to give up.
