Worshipped so, the Bhagavan whose banner is Garuda assigned him that station of his own and, while the boy stood watching, went to his own abode. And Dhruva, having got by service at Visnu's feet the very thing his resolve had shaped, and the resolve now quiet in him, was not much pleased, and went back to the city. Vidura said: That highest station of Hari, who wields maya, is very hard to reach, and it is earned by worship at his feet. He won it in a single birth. How could a man who knew what is worth having think his purpose had failed? Maitreya said: Pierced in the heart by the word-arrows of his mother's rival, still remembering them, he did not want release from the lord of release; and that is why he came away burning.

Dhruva said: The station that Sananda and the others, who draw their seed upward, come to know by absorption over more than one birth, I reached in six months, coming into the shade of his feet; and I fell away, my mind still set on being separate. Look how little I am my own self, luckless as I am. I went to the foot of the one who cuts birth off, and asked him for a thing that ends.
