He is endless and he makes an end. He is time, beginningless and the maker of beginnings, never spent, begetting a creature by a creature and killing the killer by death. He takes no side and no side stands against him; the highest one enters all creatures alike as death. As dust runs after the wind, the hosts of beings, who are not their own masters, run after him as he runs. That mighty one, untouched by either and at rest in himself, deals out to a creature that is not at rest both the wearing away of its life and the growth of it. Some call him action, king, and others one's own nature; some call him time, some call him fate, and others a man's desire.

He does not show himself, he cannot be measured, and powers of many kinds rise out of him. Who knows what he means to do, dear one, or how he came to be? And these followers of the giver of wealth are not your brother's killers, my son. In a man's coming into being and his being taken away, dear one, fate is the cause.
