For thirty-six thousand years he ruled the circle of the earth, wearing his merit away by his enjoyments and his ill-doing by going without. So the great-souled one, his senses never shaken, spent a long time on what serves dharma and wealth and desire, and then gave the king's seat to his son. For he held this world to be something maya had made in the self, like a dream or a city of gandharvas put up by unknowing, and reckoning that his body, his wife, his children, his friends, his army, his full treasury, the inner rooms, the pleasant grounds he walked in, and the earth's whole circle with the sea for a girdle, were all things time had already come for, he went away to Visala.

There, his organs made clean, he went down into the holy water, took his seat, mastered the breath, drew his senses in with the mind, and held the gross form that is the Bhagavan's likeness; meditating on it, no longer standing apart from it, he let it go in absorption. Devotion to Hari the Bhagavan flowed in him without a break. Tears of gladness came and came and shook him, his heart went soft, the hair stood up on his body, and he did not remember himself as this or that; the mark of him had fallen away.
