With pearls, with garlands of flowers, with fine cloths, with golden archways and with deeply fragrant incense, the city was dressed in one place after another. Its lanes and squares and roads were wet with sandal and aloe water, and it was honoured with flowers, whole grains, fruit, young shoots, parched rice and burning lamps. It was set off with plantain trunks in their clusters and with young areca palms, and decked on every side with garlands of leaves and fresh twigs. The people came out to meet him with lamps and offerings and every good thing gathered together, and with them girls freshly bathed and wearing bright earrings.

With the sound of conches and drums and the chanting of the priests, the hero entered his house, praised as he went, and with no pride in him. Honoured, he honoured them in return, in one place after another, this townsman and that man of the country: a king of great renown, glad, and giving what was dearest and best.
