1Having given this instruction, the revered Hara, honoured by the sons of Barhisad, vanished on the spot while the king's sons looked on. 2All the Pracetases, muttering that song of Rudra, the praise of the Bhagavan, did austerity in the water for ten thousand years. 3Ksatta, Narada, who knows what the inner self is and is full of pity, woke Pracinabarhis, whose mind was stuck fast in his works. 4King, what good do you seek for yourself by works? The good is the ending of pain and the getting of happiness, and that is not to be had here. 5Greatly favoured one, I do not know what is higher; my understanding is pierced through with works. Tell me the clear knowledge by which I may be freed from them.
6A dull man in his house, with its counterfeit duties, his mind on sons and wife and wealth and gain, does not find what is higher; he goes wandering the tracks of the round of birth.
