King, lord of creatures: look at the animals you have quieted at your sacrifice, whole herds of living things, in their thousands, and no pity in you. They are waiting for you, remembering the butchery you did them, and when you have passed on they will cut you with iron horns, their anger risen. On this I will tell you an old story. Take in the doings of Puranjana as I say them. There was a king named Puranjana, king, whose fame was great; and he had a friend named Avijnata, whose doings were not known. That master wandered the earth looking for a shelter, and when he found nothing that suited him he grew low in spirit.

He thought none of them good, of all the cities on the face of the earth; wanting the things he wanted, he found none of them fit for this or for that.
