There is a lord of gandharvas known as Candavega, king, and his strong gandharvas number three hundred and sixty. And gandharva women as many as they, their mates, some white and some black. Circling round and round, they plunder the city that was built for every desire. When those followers of Candavega set about carrying off Puranjana's city, the wakeful one there held them off. Alone against seven hundred and twenty, the strong watchman of Puranjana's city fought the gandharvas for a hundred years. As his one kinsman wore thin, fighting so many, he was stricken, and fell into deep worry, he with his land and his city and his people.

But there in the city among the Pancalas he went on tasting sweetness, taking the tribute his attendants brought him, beaten by his wife, and never saw the danger.
