A doe comes down to drink· Verses 1–6

One day, at the great river, having bathed and done the observances required of him, murmuring the syllable of Brahman, he sat down at the water's edge for the space of three watches. There, king, a doe came down alone to the edge of that water, being thirsty. While she was drinking, not far off there went up the roar of a lion, a sound that frightens the world. Hearing it, the doe, timid by nature and looking about her startled, her heart the more taken up with fear of the lion, her eyes swimming, her thirst unfinished, sprang away all at once in fright. As she leapt, the young she was carrying slipped from her in that great fear, came out of her womb, and fell into the current.

Spent with the birth and the leaping and the fear, cut off from her own herd, that black doe fell in a cave and died.
