Why the shape of the earth is worth hearing· Verses 1–4

You have told me how far the circle of the earth reaches: as far as the sun burns, and as far as he, or the moon with the hosts of lights, is seen. There too seven seas were laid out by the seven trenches dug by the wheels of Priyavrata's chariot, and from that, revered one, you pointed out how this earth falls into seven separate islands. All of it I want to know, by its measure and by its marks. A mind that has been set on the Bhagavan's gross form, which is made of the strands, is fit afterwards to be set on what is beyond the strands, the subtlest, the light of the self, the supreme Brahman, the Bhagavan called Vasudeva. Teacher, you ought to describe that to us.

Great king, no man can reach the limit of the Bhagavan's power in maya and the strands, either by mind or by speech, not even with the lifetime of a god. So I shall set out the make of the earth's globe in its main features only, by name, form, measure and mark.
