The island, the nine regions, and the boundary mountains· Verses 5–10

This island is the inner whorl within the whorl of the lotus of the earth, a hundred thousand yojanas across, evenly round like a lotus leaf. In it are nine regions, each nine thousand yojanas long, well divided from one another by eight boundary mountains. In the middle of these is the inner region called Ilavrta, and at its navel stands Meru, king of the first mountains, gold from top to bottom, the seed-cup of that lotus of the earth, as tall as the island is broad. At the head it spreads thirty-two thousand yojanas, at the base sixteen thousand, and it goes that far down into the earth. North of Ilavrta, one beyond the next, Nila, Sveta and Srngavat are the boundary mountains of the regions Ramyaka, Hiranmaya and Kuru. They run east, reach the salt sea at both ends, and are two thousand yojanas broad; each one further north is shorter than the one before it by a tenth of its length.

So too, south of Ilavrta, Nisadha, Hemakuta and Himalaya run east as Nila and the others do, ten thousand yojanas high, and belong in that order to Harivarsa, Kimpurusa and Bharata. And in the same way, west of Ilavrta and east of it, Malyavat and Gandhamadana reach as far as Nila and Nisadha, spread out two thousand yojanas, and make the boundary of Ketumala and Bhadrasva.
