Verse 6
Where the four branches go· Verses 6–11
6Sita runs from Brahma's seat down and down over the peaks of Kesaracala and the other mountains, falls on the heads of Gandhamadana, and crossing the middle of the region of Bhadrasva goes into the salt sea in the east. 7So Caksu falls from the peak of Malyavat, and from there, with its speed unbroken, goes past Ketumala into the lord of rivers in the west. 8And Bhadra falls northward from the head of Meru, leaps from mountain peak to mountain peak, streams down from the horn of Srngavat, and about the northern Kurus goes into the sea in the north. 9And Alakananda goes south from Brahma's seat, crosses many mountain summits, and from Hemakuta tumbles over the golden summits in a rush faster than the rest, goes past the region of Bharata and enters the sea in the south. For a man who comes to bathe in it, the fruit of the horse sacrifice and the royal consecration and the rest is not hard to get, at every step.
10And there are other streams and rivers besides, many in every region, daughters of Meru and the other mountains, by the hundred. 11And of these it is Bharata alone that is a field of works. The other eight regions they call places on the ground where those who belong to heaven enjoy what is left over of their good works, stations of heaven set on the earth.
