The island of kusa grass, and the fire· Verses 13–17

।

।

So too, outside the ocean of wine and twice its size, ringed as the one before it was by an ocean of clarified butter equal to itself, lies the island of kusa grass. On it a clump of kusa made by the gods, which gives the island its name, lights up the quarters with the shine of its young blades, like a second fire. The lord of that island, king, was Hiranyareta of Priyavrata's line. He divided his island in shares among his seven sons, Vasu, Vasudana, Drdharuci, Nabhigupta, Stutyavrata, Vivikta and Vamadeva, and himself took up austerity. In their regions seven boundary mountains and seven rivers are known: Cakra, Catuhsrnga, Kapila, Citrakuta, Devanika, Urdhvaroman and Dravina; Rasakulya, Madhukulya, Mitravinda, Srutavinda, Devagarbha, Ghrtacyuta and Mantramala.

Living on their waters, the people of the kusa island, called Kusala, Kovida, Abhiyukta and Kulaka, worship with skill in rites the Bhagavan in the form of the fire that knows all that is born. You who know all that is born, you who carry the offering, are the highest Brahman face to face. Worship the Person by sacrifice to the gods, who are the Person's limbs.
