There is another beyond me, in whom this world of what moves and what stands is woven across and along like cloth; from a portion of whom come the standing and the birth and the ending of it; and in whose power the world is, as a bull is by the cord in its nose. He binds people by names to his own speech, as cattle are bound by ropes to a line; and these here carry him tribute, tied by the bonds of name and work, and afraid. I, and great Indra, Nirrti, Pracetas, Soma, Agni, Isa, the wind, the sun, Virinci; the Adityas and the Visvas, the Vasus, then the Sadhyas, the companies of Maruts, the companies of Rudras, and the perfected ones with them;

and the others too, the makers of the world, the lords among the deathless, Bhrgu and the rest, untouched by passion and darkness: even they, with clarity uppermost in them, do not know what he means to do, for maya has touched them. What of the others, then? Whom those who carry life do not make out by the senses, or the mind, or the breaths, or the heart, or speech: he is the self within the heart of selves, as things that have shape do not make out the eye, which is beyond them. The messengers of that Hari, who stands on himself alone, who rules over all, the highest, the master of maya, great of self, are for the most part beautiful here, and go about carrying his own form and qualities and nature.

Visnu's beings, honoured by the gods, their marks hard to make out, and full of wonder, guard the mortals who are devoted to him from others, and from me, and from every side.
