For what reason were the gods abandoned by their own teacher? Tell me this, revered one: how pupils came to offend against a teacher. Indra, whose lordship over the three worlds had so gone to his head that he stepped off the good road, sat surrounded by the Maruts, the Vasus, the Rudras, the Adityas and the Rbhus, king, by the All-gods and the Sadhyas and the two Nasatyas, by siddhas and caranas and gandharvas, and by sages who speak of Brahman, by vidyadharas and nymphs, by kinnaras, by birds and serpents. Waited on and praised, Maghavan sat there, Bharata, and sweetly sung to, taking the high seat of the assembly, under a white parasol as lovely as the circle of the moon,

with the other marks of the highest place about him, yak-tail fans and the rest, shining greatly, and with Puloma's daughter beside him, sharing half his seat.
