18The moment they heard of it the demons all took the counsel of Usanas and, mad with pride and with their weapons raised, moved against the gods. 19With their limbs and thighs and arms split open by the sharp arrows those let fly, they went with Indra to Brahma for refuge, their necks bowed. 20Seeing them so badly battered, the god, the revered self-born and unborn one, spoke to them out of great pity, comforting them. 21Ah, best of the gods, a great harm is what you have done. Out of lordship you failed to welcome a brahmin deep in Brahman and holding himself in check. 22This beating you have taken from others came of that misconduct: you who were flourishing, gods, brought down by your own enemies, and they worn away to nothing.
23Look, Maghavan: your enemies, ground down for overstepping their teacher, have grown strong again by serving Kavya with devotion. Those whose gods are the Bhrgus will take even my own dwelling from me. 24What do they care for the three heavens, whose spells cannot be broken and who have been taught their aims by the Bhrgus? Nothing goes badly for those lords of men whose masters are brahmins, Govinda and the cow. 25So go quickly and serve Visvarupa, the brahmin, Tvastr's son, an ascetic and master of himself. Honoured, he will see to your ends, if you can bear with what he does.
