4With feet and hands washed, after sipping water, wearing the ring of grass, facing north, having set the syllables on his limbs and on his hands with the two mantras, holding his speech, clean: 5so, when fear has come, let him buckle on the armour made of Narayana. On the feet, the knees, the thighs, the belly, the heart, then the chest, 6on the mouth and on the head, let him set in order the syllables that begin with om: om namo narayanaya. Or else the other way round. 7Then let him make the placing on the hands with the twelve-syllable knowledge, from om at the start to ya at the end, on the joints of the fingers and the thumbs.
8Let him set the syllable om on the heart, the vi that follows on the crown of the head, the sa between the brows, and the na on the tuft of hair. 9Let him join the ve to the eyes and the na to all the joints, and take the ma for a weapon; and the wise man becomes the body of the mantra. 10That, with the visarga and ending in phat, he should send out to all the quarters: om, salutation to Visnu. 11Let him meditate on the supreme Self, the one to be meditated on, joined with the six powers, whose body is knowledge and fire and austerity, and let him say out this mantra.
