Swallowed though he was by the lord of the demons, he did not die inside that belly. The great Person was his armour, and the power of yogamaya. Splitting the belly open with his bolt, the mighty breaker of Bala came out and cut off his enemy's head with his strength, as one cuts off a mountain peak. But the bolt, for all its swiftness, turning and cutting on every side of that neck, took as long to bring it down as the lights take to run their course, at the killing of Vrtra. Then kettledrums sounded in the sky, and gandharvas and siddhas with the companies of great sages praised him with the verses that mark the killing of Vrtra, and gladly rained down flowers.

Out of Vrtra's body, tamer of enemies, went the light that was his own self, and while all the worlds looked on it reached what lies beyond the worlds.
