When Vrtra was killed, giver of much, the three worlds with their guardians were at once rid of their fever and their senses came to rest, all but Sakra. The gods, the sages, the fathers and the beings, the Daityas and the followers of the gods went back of themselves to their own places, and after them Brahma, Siva, Indra and the rest. Sage, I want to hear why Indra had no rest. By that killing the gods were made happy: where did Indra's own sorrow come from? All the gods with the sages, shaken by Vrtra's strength, asked Indra to kill him. He would not: he was afraid of killing a brahmin. The guilt that came of killing Visvarupa was divided among women, the earth, the trees and the waters, who took their share in kindness. Where am I to wipe off the killing of Vrtra?
