Why I gave you only a son· Verses 17–22

I am Angiras, king, the one who gave you the son you wanted. This is Brahma's own son, the revered sage Narada. You belong within the reach of the great Person and do not deserve to be sunk like this in the hard dark of grief for a son; and remembering that, we two have come here to do you a kindness, lord. One who is good to brahmins and devoted to the Bhagavan does not deserve to sink down. I would have given you the highest knowledge when I came to your house then; but knowing that your mind was fixed on something else, I gave you only a son. Now you are feeling for yourself the burning that men with sons feel. It is the same with wives, houses, money, and the many kinds of wealth that come with mastery,

and with sounds and the other things the senses take, and with the unsteady splendours of a kingdom: the land, the rule, the army, the treasury, the servants, the ministers and the friends.
